Once again, John DeDakis has written a book full of suspense and intrigue... a real page turner. DeDakis is a veteran journalist who clearly knows his business, resulting in characters who are believable and compelling. In "Bluff," Lark proves her expert sleuthing abilities once again. As I read this book, I pictured her on the "front lines" in Madison, WI covering the current public employees demonstrators in the Capitol Building! She would be there, she'd dig, and she'd get the story right. I'm looking forward to Lark's future adventures.
I had eagerly awaited this book, but did not get to read it when it first came out. Good thing! When I did pick it up, I did not put it down until I finished it! John Dedakis knows the settings in which he places his characters, understands what makes them tick, and weaves a story that keeps you on the edge of your seat. Bravo!!!
The action and story line in Bluff, John DeDakis' 2nd novel, just doesn't stop. As in Fast Track, the character, Lark, is off for a ride of suspense when she isn't expecting it.
DeDakis weaves in his familiar settings of Madison with great ease---although pasties are called pasties and not the name of the place in Madison that serves them! The Wisconsin setting works perfectly in the story line with a blend of country and small town newspaper and journalism school in nearby Madison.
Lark is such a believable character. Her expressions and actions are what you'd expect of her as you get to know her. DeDakis makes her come to life. In this novel, DeDakis quite convincingly unveils a plot of Lark and her boyfriend with the background story of the death of her boss' daughter, Holly, in Peru. The ending is quite a surprise and was a delight as it unfolded.
What will Lark find next?
In "Bluff," John DeDakis continues the tale of Lark Chadwick. For fans of Lark, this is a wonderful extension of her character. It picks up about six months after the end of "Fast Track." And, though this book is a sequel, it should be pointed out that reading its predecessor is not requisite to thoroughly enjoying this book!
This time out, Lark stumbles onto a real estate scam bilking the elderly. She knows something isn't right and works to uncover what really is happening and why. Meanwhile, Miss Chadwick has become suspicious of how Lionel and Muriel's daughter, Holly, died. Was it indeed an accident, or was there something (or someone) sinister behind her death?
We watch Lark Chadwick grow both personally and professionally in "Bluff." The book peppers a very human story with a twist here and there, deftly building suspense. Author John DeDakis provides ample suspects and possible motives to keep us guessing right up until the end. A page-turner well worth the read!
Dedakis' second Lark Chadwick mystery is riveting in every way. It's ultimately readable. It flows easily over the eyes while reaching out and trapping the senses. Just when you think you've got the next step figured out, Dedakis throws in a twist. The end was an exciting and unexpected - a true stunner. I had four other possibilities in mind and his ending came out of the blue. This book is so good I recommend you don't read it while commuting...because you'll miss your stop! Buy it today and call in sick tomorrow!

BUFF is an intriguing story because of Larks' flowering growth and the battles she struggles to overcome emotionally. Lark developed her own personna and listens to her intuition as she becomes a stronger woman. Her tenacity, curiosity and passion drives her forward to become a ace reporter. The story had twists and turns that kept me up at night read Bluff.
If possible, this book is better than the first book in the series, Fast Track. Excellent plot twists and character development. While it stands alone, read the books in the order they were written. You'll thank yourself.
